"The Love of the Nightingale" by Timberlake Wertenbaker, based on the myth of Philomela by Ovid. This play recounts the ancient legend of Philomele. She falls in love with the captain, then is raped by Tereus, whose lies betray her. Then, silence is enforced upon Philomele in unmentionable ways. As the acts of Tereus become known, the gods themselves intervene to bring justice for Philomele. |
